Position Title: SUMMER CONSERVATION INTERNS

The Shell Conservation Internship Program is a partnership initiative between the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) and Shell Canada Limited (Shell) to provide university/college students with practical experience in the conservation field. In 2012, the Shell Conservation Internship Program will engage students from across Canada in stewardship and management work on NCC properties and in other career-related activities that advance the work of NCC. This partnership builds on the successful history of Shell and NCC working together over the past 29 years to conserve many of our country’s most important natural places.

The Summer Conservation Intern positions are designed to support NCC’s need for coordinated field data collection and stewardship activities on NCC properties throughout Alberta.

Specific Responsibilities

Work closely with the Conservation Coordinator(s) to perform:

  • Collect and maintain field data (e.g. weed inventories, wildlife observations and photo reference points) from NCC properties throughout Alberta;
  • Document natural and anthropogenic disturbances;
  • Implement property management activities, including weed control, site clean-up, erecting signs, trail maintenance and fixing fences;
  • Synthesize field data into monitoring reports that will be used by Conservation Operations staff in the management of NCC properties; and
  • Recommend stewardship and management actions for NCC properties based on observations in the field.

Skills and Abilities

This posting is targeted to university or college students in an environmental or biological field of study possessing the following skills:

  • Ability to work well in a team setting, outdoors for extended periods and under various weather conditions (e.g. temperature and precipitation extremes) and terrains (e.g. crossing small creeks by foot or climbing up steep slopes;
  • Excellent plant and wildlife identification skills;
  • Highly motivated, analytical, detail-oriented, creative and proactive;
  • Self motivated, superior time management and organizational skills, ability to work to meet deadlines;
  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills; and
  • Valid Non-Probationary (Class 5) Driver’s License
  • Experience and/or familiarity using GPS, hand-held weed removal tools, fencing pliers, hammers and scythes is an asset

Terms of Employment

  • This is a full-time 16-week (May 7th -August 24th, 2012) position. Salary is $16/hour ($640/week).
  • Positions will be based in Calgary, Lethbridge/Cardston and Red Deer/Edmonton, but require travel throughout Alberta with overnight stays away from home office. When away from the home office, accommodations for the intern will include camping and hotels; meals on the road and other travel expenses will be covered by NCC or reimbursed.
