The Shell Conservation Internship Program is a partnership initiative between the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) and Shell Canada Limited to provide university/college students with practical experience in the conservation field. Launched in 2002, the Shell Conservation Internship Program will, in 2012, engage students from across Canada in stewardship and management work on NCC properties, and in other career-related activities that advance the work of NCC. This partnership builds on the successful history of Shell Canada and NCC working together over the past 29 years to conserve many of our country’s most important natural places.

The stewardship mapping intern will assist in the implementation of the stewardship program for natural areas protected by NCC in the Maritimes. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the Nova Scotia Stewardship Coordinator, NS Stewardship Field Interns and NB/PE Stewardship Field Interns to support stewardship activities in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. The intern will produce mapping that will guide stewardship fieldwork, will manage geographic data collected in the field and will produce maps relevant to NCC natural areas across the Maritimes.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Map property features, ecological communities and rare species locations for use in fieldwork;
  • Produce high quality, professional maps for use in NCC reports and documents;
  • Manage stewardship field data (primarily collected by GPS) including download, file structure and organization and analysis;
  • Obtain, organize and manage imagery (aerial photography and satellite imagery);
  • Maintain and manage existing spatial databases and provide advice on creation of new ones;
  • Assist the Nova Scotia Stewardship Coordinator and Shell Conservation Field Interns with ongoing stewardship activities as needed.

Skills and Abilities

This posting is targeted to students possessing the following qualifications:

  • University or College students or recent graduates with a degree in Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Cartography or related disciplines;
  • Significant experience making maps and depicting and analyzing information using ArcGIS Software.
  • Extensive knowledge of, and experience with GPS units;
  • Knowledge of coordinate systems;
  • Experience with aerial photo interpretation
  • Ability to work independently, self motivated, superior time management skills, ability to meet deadlines;
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite
  • Database and Geodatabase development and management experience considered an asset;
  • Extremely strong organization skills;
  • Strong communication skills, and an ability to work as part of a team;
  • Demonstrated interest in land conservation;

Terms of Employment

  • This is a full-time, 16-week (May – August) position. Wage is $15.50/hour ($542.50/week)
  • This position is based in Dartmouth, NS.
