Hello from southern New Brunswick!
I’ve had a great first month working with NCC in the Musquash Estuary, the last fully functioning estuary ecosystem of its kind in the region - - and recently designated a Marine Protected Area by the Federal government. I feel tremendously fortunate to work here, in essentially my own backyard, as I grew up only 10-15 minutes away in Little Lepreau, a small fishing community.
NCC wants to develop a trail network through the coastal forest of Musquash for public use and education. In my position with NCC, I am supervising the interpretation and construction of the first segment of the trail network. The trail will run from Black Beach (yes, the sand is black!) to Frenchman’s Creek (pictured below) and then loop back to the beach again. I’m excited to be able to help with the initial trail construction and aid in the development and installation of water-crossings, interpretive signs, look-out points and trail markings.
I am currently a Forest Technologist and graduate of the Maritime College of Forest Technology. Next year I plan to graduate from the University of New Brunswick with a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry and Environmental Management with a Wildlife Minor. I want to focus my career around conservation management, particularly habitat management and conservation. I believe working with NCC is a great first step in that direction and it will provide me with invaluable work experience in the field of conservation. I’m looking forward to meeting all the other Shell Interns in Calgary at summer’s end!
See you then,
Nathan D. Brewer, FT
