Bonjour and Hello from New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island!

The past of couple months, working in some of the last pristine areas of the Atlantic Coast, have been challenging, but incredibly rewarding.  I’ve lived in the Maritimes for most of my life, but only recently, thanks to Shell Canada and the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC), have I been able to really appreciate the beauty offered by these provinces.

My work with NCC has been quite diverse, even within the short timeframe of my internship. I’ve done botanical surveys, tackled invasive species, monitored a number of properties across New Brunswick, restored some coastal forest, seen some amazing species and habitats, and the busy part of my summer is only beginning!  Future projects include a boat ride to some uninhabited islands along New Brunswick’s south shore, canoeing to an untouched wetland in Prince Edward Island, and helping out with a survey of the nationally endangered Piping Plover in New Brunswick’s north-eastern tip.

I am currently a graduate from the Maritime College of Forest Technology, as a Forest Technician, and this fall I will be entering my fourth year at the University of New Brunswick, working on my Bachelor of Science in Environmental Management. I had the pleasure of meeting the other Shell Conservation Interns from across Canada while at our ‘Welcome Event’ in Calgary, and it’s a great feeling to know that together, we are contributing to the protection of the beautiful natural areas of our country.

I won’t pretend to know where I’m headed once I graduate, but I do know that this experience with NCC has opened up doors for the future. Have a good one.

Cheers!
