Greetings from Nova Scotia!
Kayaking in the ocean, hiking through old growth forest, meeting with NCC land stewards – all in a day’s work for a Shell Conservation Intern in the Atlantic Region! Since I started in May, I have been busy visiting NCC properties throughout the province of Nova Scotia, meeting the people responsible for stewarding them, and conducting site assessments.
My recent trip to the Pugwash River Estuary made me realize just how cooperative NCC’s approach to land conservation is. The Estuary, a wetland complex located in northwestern NS, is home to a variety of ecosystems that sustain abundant native flora and fauna. NCC is working closely with a local conservation group there to steward conservation lands throughout the estuary, and I am quickly learning that NCC is not only about conserving the integrity and beauty of Canada’s natural masterpieces, but also about forming partnerships with communities and local organizations.

During my internship this summer, I am able to work with community members to educate the public about the role of NCC and also share information about how to keep natural areas unspoiled for generations to come. I just graduated from Mount Allison University in New Brunswick with a degree in Environmental Studies and Physical Geography. After my workterm with NCC is over, I am off to Dalhousie University to pursue my Master’s degree in Environmental Studies. In my Master’s research, as well as in the future, I hope to aid natural area conservation efforts at the community level, a lesson I am very fortunate to be learning first-hand while working with NCC!
