Greetings from Manitoba!

I am very grateful to have the opportunity of working with the Nature Conservancy of Canada this summer through the Shell Conservation Internship Program. As a student finishing a degree in Environmental Studies, the experience that I have gained over the summer is a very important part of my education.

This summer I have been working on a riparian health project that NCC is involved with in partnership with Manitoba Habitat Heritage Corporation, Agri-Environmental Services Branch (Ag Canada), and a number of other organizations. The summer has had its challenges such as the flooding that we faced in southern Manitoba in May and June. We were unable to conduct our assessments on the Joubert Creek when the riparian area was flooded. During these two months I was able to work on projects with NCC's other Manitoban interns and I was also able to work with Manitoba Conservation Data Centre to look for the rare small white lady slipper orchid.

Through this internship I have had the opportunity to expand my knowledge of plants, especially grasses and sedges. I have been privileged to travel to a number of different locations in Manitoba and see parts of the province that I have not visited before. The beauty and diversity in this province is exceptional. I have also gained valuable insight on how different organizations in Manitoba can work together on conservation projects.

I’m looking forward to the rest of the summer. It's a summer I will never forget!

Cheers!
