| Shell Conservation Intern Tracey Wright |
Greetings from Manitoba!
My name is Tracey Wright and I will be entering my fourth year in the Environmental Studies program at the University of Manitoba. Over the years I have become increasingly interested in the area of conservation - - so being able to work as an intern with NCC this summer is an incredible opportunity. So far, it has hardly felt like a job at all; more like embarking on one nature hike after another, while learning about everything in my path!
This summer, my fellow intern, Godwin, and I will be creating baseline inventory reports for newly-secured land. In preparation, we have been monitoring previously-secured land in the Riding Mountain Aspen Parkland to gain knowledge in navigation and species identification. In doing so, we have ventured through beautifully scenic landscapes such as tamarack bogs (a personal favourite), huge spruce/aspen stands, and marshes galore. Conservation efforts are being concentrated here as it is such a pertinent area for wildlife, large and small. The land in between Riding Mountain National Park and Duck Mountain Provincial Park to the north requires special attention as it connects these two expanses of wilderness, and serves as an important wildlife corridor. It is wonderful to be able to meet landowners who really do want to make a difference and conserve their land for future generations of all species alike.
I have learned so much in the short time since I began with the NCC and anticipate all that is to come. I especially look forward to seeing the prairie in full-fledged summer bloom! My internship with NCC is providing me with insight into what my future will hold as a conservationist, as well as the experiences necessary to bring me closer to my goal.
Have a great summer!
Tracey Wright
