Hey there!
See that girl besides those incredibly beautiful yellow lady slippers? That’s me!! Xueling Gong from the Manitoba region of NCC. This September, I will be starting my final year at the University of Manitoba, for an Environmental Science degree in Environmental Assessment. I was born and raised in an east coast city of China and my first Canadian address was at Vancouver for a year and half, where the weather was pretty similar to my hometown! Then I moved to Winnipeg for school and I was so amazed by the difference weather and ecosystems.

This summer, I’m working with SCIP Tonya Lwiwiski (a self-proclaimed plant geek) to survey properties within our two targeted areas: the Tall Grass Prairie and Aspen Parkland. These two unique ecosystems have a rich diversity of flora and fauna, providing me a great opportunity to get in touch with wilderness. Initially, I had limited knowledge about wildlife, but over the past two months of work, my knowledge and appreciation has dramatically increased. Since this is my first job involving field work, the things I am experiencing are more than I ever expected! From my point of view, this job is all about enjoying the nature around me.
After graduating next year, I may continue on for a Master’s degree, or a field-related job, even go back to China. However, as one of 2008 Shell interns, this job has really helped me narrow down my future path. I think wherever I end up, I would like to be involved in conservation. Hopefully I can contribute something to make our world a better place to live.
