Hello from mid-western Ontario!
Although the summer has just begun, I have already learned so much. This job has helped me a lot to broaden my horizons and knowledge about conservation. Working as a Summer Field Technician has not only increased my flora and fauna identification skills, but I have also had many opportunities to work with other local conservation enthusiasts.
A couple of weeks ago I participated in a Volunteer for Nature event held at a property recently secured by NCC on the Northern Bruce Peninsula. The purpose of this event was to clean the garbage out of the grykes (crevices) on the alvar. This was a great opportunity to meet with many conservation-minded people who seemed to really enjoy working with NCC. I’ve never seen people have so much fun while picking up garbage! It was interesting to see how beneficial these sorts of conservation volunteer events can be and how important they are for helping us to reach the stewardship goals for our properties. In the afternoon, I was pleased to have the opportunity to help lead an interpretive tour of an alvar community. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the day!

I recently graduated from the Environmental Science program (majoring in Earth and Atmospheric Science) at the University of Guelph and this internship provides a great opportunity to work in my field of study. The hands-on skills I’m learning at NCC are truly invaluable; I know that these skills will be very beneficial in my future career as an environmental scientist.
Take care,
Sarah Piett
