Hello,

My name is Guillaume Pech and I am currently enrolled in my first year of a master’s program in Environmental Sciences at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). This summer I will work at NCC’s Quebec office as a Natural Sites Stewardship Assistant, thanks to the Shell Conservation Internship Program.

My project is located at Lake Champlain in Southern Quebec, a vital habitat for threatened Eastern Spiny Softshell (Apalone spinifera). I will be coordinating education and awareness activities in partnership with local organizations, volunteers and the Natural Resources and Wildlife Ministry. I will be monitoring and conducting an inventory of the turtle populations and create a detailed map of their habitat, particularly of their hatching sites. In these areas, land owners will be informed about the presence of the species on their land so that the turtle is not disturbed, helping to ensure its long term survival.

I will also help to write the conservation plans for NCC’s new properties around Lake Champlain. I am looking forward to being a part of the NCC team!
