Greetings from the Prairie!
My name is Leanne, and I am a farm girl - - born in Central Butte and raised ten minutes outside of Marquis, Saskatchewan. When I was seventeen, however, I was so excited to start my university career that I moved to Saskatoon to begin my studies in Biology and Physical Geography at the University of Saskatchewan. The time I’ve spent in school has made me realize how much I miss my rural Saskatchewan. Fortunately, my position as a Shell Conservation Intern is now allowing me to re-acquaint myself with my rural roots!
My work with the Nature Conservancy of Canada in the Saskatchewan region will entail conducting plant and wildlife inventories and range health assessments to determine the overall health of the sixty-seven (!) properties we will be monitoring this summer. To prepare, I have spent the previous few weeks in training- -improving my navigation skills, plant and wildlife identification skills, and learning many health assessment techniques. Most of the properties I will be visiting this summer are in the Missouri Coteau, which is a beautiful part of the world located in south-central Saskatchewan. This region consists of native prairie grasslands, lakes, and rolling hills on an extensive glacial moraine where lots of different wildlife and plant life reside.
These past few weeks have been a wonderful learning experience for me, and I hope to continue learning as much as I can about range management and the prairie landscape for the rest of the summer. I feel this experience will prepare me for my future career as a biologist in Saskatchewan.
Bye for now!
